Yonge & Eg
Yonge–Eglinton, the vibrant Midtown locale, was voted the highest ranked neighbourhood in the GTA by Toronto Life’s 2017 survey.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Mississaugas, Seneca, Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat, inhabited this area. In the 1400’s it was home to a Huron-Wendat Village, housing about 500 people in longhouses nestled among corn fields.
In the early 19th century Europeans founded the farming village of Eglinton, a cattle grazing region that was the first in North America to use cowbells for all cattle.
Yonge & Eg., home to a number of corporate headquarters, the Canada Square Tower, numerous condos, restaurants, and night life, is now a major hub for business, entertainment and urban living.
The original Postal Station K (now Stock TC), featured in this design, built in 1936 and designed by architect Murray Brown, sits in the heart of Montgomery Square. History buffs will recognize this locale as the site of Montgomery’s Tavern, which served as a staging point during the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, and continues today as a popular meeting spot.
And yes, as the name suggests, Yonge & Eglinton will be a central stop on the new Eglinton Subway line!
