Waupoos
Waupoos, situated on Smith's Bay, is the birthplace of Prince Edward County's cider and wine industry. In 2001, the first winery in PEC was established in Waupoos. Now, a few decades later, PEC is a world-class wine destination.
The name Waupoos, derives from the Ojibway word "waabooz", meaning rabbit. (Waupoos Island is thought to be shaped like a rabbit).
First Nations, including the Wendat (Huron), Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and Mississauga, dating back over 8,000 years, inhabited the area. There were once over 500 first nations villages in PEC, and a population larger than the current one.
Samuel de Champlain came through the area in 1615.
