Stratford
Stratford, located on the Avon river, Perth County, Southwestern Ontario, is best known for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival which has been running since 1953.
European settlement of the area began in the 1830's by farmers from the UK and Germany. In 1932 the town was named after the Stratford-upon-Avon England.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Ojibway, Anishinaabe, and Wendat inhabited this area. Stratford is located on land that was shared between the Neutral (Attawandaron), Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples.
The Perth County courthouse (1887), featured in this design, offers a beautiful example of High Victorian architecture.
More recently, Stratford Tourism has produced a "Bieber-iffic Map" showing sites associated with Stratford-born music superstar Justin Bieber.
