Eugenia #2

SKU: 151

Eugenia, a small community nestled within the natural beauty of Grey County just north of Flesherton, is indeed a hidden gem.

With Lake Eugenia, Eugenia falls, the Bruce trail, and nearby Beaver Valley ski resort, this locale offers residents and visitors a hiatus from the bustle of modern living.

This design depicts a view of Eugenia Falls.

Named after Princess Eugenia, the wife of Napoleon III, this hamlet was surveyed and opened for settlement in 1850. Shortly after, in 1852, prospectors got wind of a rumour that there was gold in the area, and thus Eugenia became the focus of a gold rush. It turned out that the shiny nuggets were only pyrite, or fool’s gold.

Early settlers included William Hogg, who built a sawmill in the late 1870’s, and later in 1893 completed a small Hydro Generating Station on the Beaver River, which powered the lights in Eugenia and Flesherton.

First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Ojibway, the Wendat (Huron), and the Tionontatehronnon (Petun) inhabited this area.

Each year, Eugenia commemorates the (false) gold rush of 1852 with a weekend festival of food, arts, car shows, and fun.
