Aurora

SKU: 213

Aurora, a town in York Region, was originally (1804) named Machell's Corners, after Richard Machell the first merchant to operate in the Hamlet at Wellington and Yonge.

Later Charles Doan, the first postmaster, renamed the village Aurora, after the Roman goddess of dawn. Perhaps he was inspired by the beautiful sunrises in the area.

Aurora's passion for historical preservation has been recognized with numerous Heritage awards including the Prince of Wales Prize (2008) and the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award (2009).

The Aurora Go Train station, featured in this design, is another great example of this locale's love of historic preservation.

Aurora has played home to many famous Canadians including Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, numerous NHL players and Olympians, as well as the most famous Canadian on the planet... who you probably have never heard of... what?

Yep, you read that right: Mark Rowswell, Aurora resident, recipient of the Order of Canada, known in China as the TV personality Dashan has an audience of over 800 million!

First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Wendat (Huron), Tionontati (Petun), Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg inhabited this area.
